A couple of weeks ago I read an article titled "The Science of Simplicity: Why Successful People Wear the Same Thing Every Day." I thought it was a fascinating idea, that men like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and many presidents wear (or wore) the exact same thing every day to pare down on mental clutter and decision-making. Then a few nights ago I read another article about a woman who started wearing the same thing to work as an art director, and she has had some of the most interesting responses from co-workers. One of her bosses almost gave her a raise because he was afraid she didn't have the money to buy more clothes! <<I'm not linking to the article because it's got some ads on the website I don't necessarily want to endorse, but if you want to look it up, just google Matilda Kahl. It's gone totally viral.>>
I thought the idea was pretty groundbreaking. I mean, how many times have I been in a hurry to leave the house and been stressed because I couldn't decide what to wear, which in turn made me late and even more stressed? And how many parents and teachers sing the praises of school uniforms for children? It seemed like something I should start implementing in my life.
And then it hit me...
I already do this!!!
I pick one outfit per tour and I wear it every night, without fail. I haven't always done this, mind you. At the beginning of my career, I thought I needed to wear different clothes every night, but good gracious, do you know how difficult it is to pick out ONE ensemble that meets all the requirements I have for stage clothes? They have to be comfortable, modest, not too boring, but not too flashy, and then there is this intangible factor--a feeling I have to get while wearing the clothes. Like I am comfortable in my own skin and not wearing a "costume." If I feel strange in the clothes, it affects my performance and my ability to really focus on what I'm there to do instead of on how I feel or look in my clothes. So, one outfit per tour is all I can muster. Maybe if I can find another top that works as an alternate, I will bring it out, but I won't change anything else about the look, and it's been life-changing!
It goes beyond the stage, though. It used to be that during the day before it was time for stage clothes, I would wear something different every day backstage. But even that has become too much when I'm traveling and working and being creative every day, not to mention taking care of my kiddos. So by default, or out of pure desperation, I have developed somewhat of a "day uniform" as well. It consists of: black legging jeans, black moto boots (similar here), an Everlane t-shirt or Madewell top (similar here), and a long black cardigan. The only jewelry I wear these days are rings. Besides my wedding rings, these two (both gifts from the world's best husband) are in constant rotation. They are so delicate and wearable and timeless. I can't get enough!
Here's a picture of me today in the Madewell tee.
It's really freed me up to be more productive and creative and also to enjoy my surroundings and the people I'm traveling with, instead of always being concerned with what I'm wearing. And I don't think anyone's even noticed!
I know my job is a bit unique, but I think the same rules apply in whatever job you find yourself in--a lot of my mom friends who stay at home have come to wear the same thing each day too, for the same reasons. I'd love to know if any of you have a daily uniform and how it's affected your life. If not, would you ever consider wearing the same thing every day? Do you find that picking out your clothes is a lot of work? Has anyone but me read this funny little book?
xo!
Francesca
P.S. My soundtrack for this post was Dave Barnes' "Hymns For Her."
Are you a small in Everlane tees?
ReplyDeleteYes! Except in their v-neck I wish I had bought a medium just because I prefer a bigger fit. Love everything I have of theirs!
DeleteBig fan of you and Jamie Grace! I love the dress and those cute rings!
DeleteI absolutely hate dresses! They make me feel like I'm like I'm a toddler, or a baby all over again! I only wear sterling silver jewelry (rings are a size: 4), because everything else tarnishes-and then I'll just have to throw it away! I absolutely LOVE wearing rings! The pink-E ones are my personal favorite, because I was born: 24-weeks. gestation: 1 pound, 5 ounces, and 12 inches long at birth! ! I wear my Write Your Story neck-less everyday for my: "everyday uniform"-you of all people should know why! :D :D!!
ReplyDeletenice!
DeleteI'm a nurse... So I have a daily work uniform of scrubs (you can read that as pajamas) but the funny thing is that since my work uniform is so I casual I tend to "over dress" on my own time... So my friends tease me when we are just going to grab dinner and I bust out my eye shadow and wear my hair down (for work I only wear foundation, and maybe eye liner and mascara on a dressy day)
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't fit with the blog, but I have a question about your music... I've noticed there is a theme of mercy, you mention it in several songs (ex motion of mercy...obviously, beautiful, beautiful, run to Jesus...etc) i feel like it's an obvious common theme in Christian music, so it's not surprising, but I was just curious if for you that was a deliberate thing you like to write about or if it kinda just works its way into your songs.
Ok one more thing while I have your attention... I was wondering if I could ask you to pray for something... It's easier to ask you than my friends because I don't want them to feel sorry for me or be afraid to express they are happy with their own lives, but I'm having a really hard time... My mom passed away unexpectedly in February, it was after finding out she had cancer only 5 weeks earlier, but now are coming all the firsts without her... Easter, my birthday was yesterday, and now Mother's Day is looming in the near future, we don't have any more mothers in our family, I'm not another, so it just brings up a lot of sadness and even failure that I'm not. I'd appreciate it but I know you are crazy busy so the first half is why I wrote this, I just thought I'd throw in the last part. Thanks.
I'll be praying for you and your family!
DeleteThank you
DeleteHey girl! Praying for you!!
DeleteFranny-
ReplyDeleteIn a kinda sorta way I wear the same stuff every day. For work (I work at an ice cream shop called The Oasis in my town) I'll wear the same two capris and a couple of shirts that I got from Winter Jam. But on the contrary side I wear some leggings and a nice top for church or for a special occasion. by the way I love the top that you were wearing for Winter Jam. Is that shirt from one of the links that you listed above?
Fran-Fran- (Is it OK I call you Fran-Fran?)
No, Sorry. I haven't read that book. Should I though Fran?
It was from Free People!
DeleteThanks... I just went thru the whole website. And didn't find that top. :( Loved the post tho Franny! :)
DeleteBtw this have nothing to do with what you said. I love u so much Franny! You are an inspiration to me and have been for six years now. I sang your song "He Knows My Name" in my school talent show. I know it might be a long shot but I at least have faith as small as a mustard seed. I want to be a Christian Artist like you. You are so pretty! I know God has called me to lead worship and lead people to Christ through music. Btw I'm only thirteen. But I believe I can do it someday, no matter how hard. If you can do it I can do it. We are of the same worth in God's eyes (I have to remind myself that a lot).
ReplyDeleteWhere is your tunic from that you wear during concerts?
ReplyDeletefree people!
DeleteHaha! I read this post and instantly had a flashback; recalling your nighttime routine in hotel rooms, lolol. So obviously, "Hahaha! This is so Franny," came out of my mouth as I read the part about the indescribable "feeling" of your stage attire. :D I must admit though, I'm the same way about my clothes. Miss you, Shmeh! Xoxoxo
ReplyDeletehaha oh my goodness girl!!! how are you?
DeleteI just read another blog article on this same topic! The article I read talked about how you can consolidate all of your clothes into 37 piece wardrobe called a "wardrobe capsule." Don't know if I'm brave enough to go down to 37 pieces, but after reading that article I filled up a bag of clothes to give away! :)
ReplyDeletelove the capsule idea too!!
DeleteFrancesca, your song, Emily (It's Love), saved my life. Below is a link to my testimony. I pray that you will see it and know that your music touches, encourages, and saves lives. Thank you so very much!

DeleteYour testimony is an outreach ministry for so many girls who have encountered feeling this way! Your strength prevails Emily and it shows that our Lord Jesus Christ's love never fails.
DeleteRe: One of my family members this year committed suicide. Her name was Emily and her story was so very similar to yours. Please go forward in knowing that this is only the forefront of your destination of being used by our most heavenly Father! We are all sisters in Christ and I am so thrilled to have met you through your incredible outreach testimony! <3

I am not sure that I can even consider wearing the same thing everyday unless it is my earrings haha. I love fashion and when I go to churh two times on Sundays I wear 2 different outfits that day. I love fashion!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me curious though about the results that you mentioned ... Not sure if I will try it sometime. Interesting article!
thats so funny! go girl!
DeleteI read the same article that you did, and afterwards I was discussing with someone how a woman couldn't do something like that. In the workplace is expected that women wear something different every day. I can't imagine a female could get away with what the male CEOs in that article describes. the closest I can imagine would be wearing a white blouse under a number of different suits you switched out. I did work with a female once that wore a pair of khakis, a button down blouse and a sweater everyday but she had multiple button down blouses and multiple sweaters. I think that's the closest I've ever seen in the workplace for a woman unless it was something like a medical environment etc or there's a uniform.
ReplyDeletesuch an interesting thing to think about, isn't it?

ReplyDeleteI like to touch base on YouTube occasionally and see the recent performances you have done. This 2015 winter jam I scrolled through YouTube, I had noticed that every concert posted you had the same outfit on every evening. It got me to ponder why would she wear the same outfit every evening? I have never seen an artist wear the same outfit every concert. It is not bad it is actually great because it is good to have one outfit so that one can be the signature wardrobe for the tour. I like the fact that your not dressed to impress. I love the whole outfit it is so cute.
ReplyDeleteSo the answer to your question I have occasionally thought about wearing the same outfit everyday, but at school, no not really. I can if I really wanted to but normally I choose not to. My mom tells me that I should wear the same pants at least 2 or 3 times before throwing them into the wash, and I do. I might wear the same outfit 2 times in the same week but not back to back. Honestly I have quite a few clothing to not be wearing a different outfit everyday not unless it was the same pants with a different top.
Your Hair !!!!!! :) LOVE IT!!!
I love your hair I can't stop looking at your hair whenever you post new pictures. This summer I am very considering to copy your look. Kind of on purpose, but mainly I love your style and I want to try it out. Do you remember when you got highlights in the year, I believe 2009. Well now I am on a highlight kick. I use to have natural highlights like 2-3 years ago but now they have faded into my dark blond hair. I loved how the highlights looked in my hair and so I want them back again. My aunt has beautiful highlights all around in her hair, and it makes me want to get highlights more and more now. I don't really know but I think the side bangs are in style. I love your side bang, it is gorgeous. When I was in my last few years of elementary school and early middle school years I had bangs but I just hated them because I hated how my hair would always get into my eyes and it bugged the crap out of me. The reason why I want the side bang is because I love it dearly, when I get the side bang I don't want it to be too low when it curves so it gets into my eyes. I kind of want to get the same side bangs as you because it seems that it doesn't invade your eyes and it looks like it curves nicely which makes it look like they are connected nicely with the rest of your hair. Yes, how you pull off your hair style makes every body want to pull it off too, that's why its so awesome.
I have notice that me and you part our hair on the same side of our head; on the right. we also have the same length of hair that barley touches our shoulder, well mine barley touches. If I curled my hair in the same style as you we would be like twins. Crazy right.
The book on amazon I have not heard about yet. I might check it out, I hope it is as good as you say it is.
Thanks again, have a beautiful rest of your day my talented one.

I just read the article and I couldn't help but email and text the link all through my family. Even if the article only mentions only guys there is not doubt in my mind that girls can't do the same.

ReplyDeleteI've been wearing my own "uniform" if you will, to my corp job for years. It pretty much consists of the same outfit as your concert look! Nice dressy T, cardigan, and black jeans or black dress pants. Every day. My friends always call it my "work uniform", to which I say, "yep". Makes life a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteso fun!
DeleteUuhm, so you wear $100 jeans on a daily basis? Wow. Think I'll stick with more affordable stuff - like from Goodwill.
ReplyDeleteHaha. I know right. Even though a $100 pair of jeans is nice, but every day, I might have to think about that. :)
DeleteYeah, I invested in them about 3 years ago and have worn them almost every day since. I'd say thats a pretty great return on investment! I own 3 pair of well-made pants and skirt or 2. Works for me!
DeleteI'm so glad you posted about that. One I think it's amazing that you wear the same outfit on tour. You are focused on what's important and that's amazing for young women to see :)
ReplyDeleteYou have inspired me to set out my clothes this weekend for work next week to see how less stressed I am rushing to get out the door!
And thanks for the book info- definitely plan on getting that. Always looking for new ways to declutter. I'm loving your blog ;)
God bless!
So how did it go? ;)
DeleteSo far so good! I ended up doing 3 days just for space. It's definitely saved me some time and aggravation though! Now I just have to figure out a way to set out accessories with them ;)
ReplyDeleteI've also tried to pay more attention to my coworkers. And I've noticed that some of them wear black pants all week and I've never noticed or thought it was strange. So I'm not going to stress about wearing the same pants again in the same week. Sweet!
Thanks for asking ;)
This sounds like a great idea! Lol i'm not much into fashion so i'm almost always disorganized with my clothes.... I think I'm going to try this! Plus get rid of all the stuff I have that I don't even wear anymore haha.
ReplyDeleteThis is how I feel about wearing my uniform everyday in the military. Some days, I get bored and wish I could wear something else but most of the time it just makes my mornings simple.

ReplyDeleteLove this article! I'm always trying to figure out what to wear and am always thinking about how long this takes and how it's so unnecessary. I do tend to do this type of thing in the summer, a pair of nike running shorts and a t-shirt (Fashionable, I know.) But it's comfy and practical for everyday wear. But I like the simplicity of the outfit you choose. I may just have to try this! I'm all about a comfy, simple outfit. No fuss.
